Sharlene Conning

Sharlene Conning, the eldest child of Ripeka (Peka) Waipara and James Conning, has always been deeply connected to her family's heritage. Growing up with the influence of her grandparents, Kahui Pani Ria and TeManawa-o-te-rangi Waipara, she developed a profound respect for her cultural roots. Her childhood memories are rich with experiences at Ohako Marae, especially after moving back to Gisborne and attending Manutuke School.

With a career spanning over three decades in education and social work, Sharlene has dedicated herself to community service and personal development. She is continuously advancing her skills, particularly in leadership, to better serve her team and community as their Kaitataki. Her professional journey reflects her commitment to supporting and nurturing the growth of those around her.

As a trustee of her marae, Sharlene's focus is on preserving the mana and teachings of her ancestors for future generations. She feels a strong sense of responsibility to maintain the marae's traditions and to ensure its continued relevance and vibrancy for the mokopuna. Her leadership is guided by values of integrity, strength, and aroha, embodying the spirit of her whānau and their ancestral legacy.
