Kennzy Hotene's story is deeply entwined with the community of Manutuke, where she grew up immersed in her family's rich history and the vibrant life of her rohe. Raised near her great grandparents' house on Main Road, Kennzy's childhood was shaped by the strong influences of her ancestors, Airini Pohatu and Jack Gerrard.
Kennzy's memories of growing up in the 1980s are filled with cultural richness and simplicity. She witnessed the early days of the Kohanga Reo movement, which played a crucial role in reviving Te Reo among younger generations. Her experiences during this time were characterized by the community's direct involvement in supporting the marae through grassroots initiatives like euchre fundraisers.
Her deep connection to Ohako Marae has been a constant throughout her life, from participating in its activities as a child to enjoying the simple pleasures of summer days by the swinging bridge. Being nominated as a trustee for Ohako Marae reflects Kennzy's enduring dedication to her community. In this role, she embraces the opportunity for growth and learning, driven by an unwavering passion for her heritage. Kennzy's commitment to her people embodies the principles of awhi and tautoko, as she continues to serve and uplift her community with integrity and strength.
